Recommend a New Washing Machine?

Options
Can anyone recommend a new washer /drier, preferably one available on 0% somewhere although that isn't an essential.
We currently have an ariston margherita which has served us for almost 6 years ... considering the amount of washing we do, I don't think that's a short life.

    Try https://www.clearence@comet.co.uk

They have shop soiled units that go on an auction basis. It's a bit like e bay but they come with 1 years guarantee as standard.

I would avoid the unboxed, used and returned items.

We recently bought a Beko 1400 spin speed washing machine for £160 (with an RRP of £230) including delivery. Apparently it had a scratch on the casing but we couldn't find it. It was brand new.

a few years ago I bought a rand new SERVIS washer dryer for less than half price at around £125.

Its the luck of the draw.

It appear that Bosch is the current brand of choice...

    Any comments?

  • I had a washing machine repair chap out recently to look at my just over 1 year old hotpoint... which incidently is made by indesit... he recommended that my next machine should be a Bosch... as I wouldn't have any need to see him!!! The build quaility is good and I have heard this from different repair people for a while now.... I was trying to save money as I had to get new washer and tumbler at the same time.. false economy - I can see that now!

We are a 5 person household - 3 of whom are under 6 so I do huge amounts of washing maybe average 3/4 loads a day. My hotpoint was great the "super silent wash" was aboslutely fanatasic for the first 3 months - now it makes huge amounts of noise when spinning etc and on a few occasions the out of balance spin protection feature has not worked (i.e on a wool wash when there was not a lot in the machine - apperently I under-loaded it!)... I can safely say that I will never buy a hotpoint again - I should have known really was £500+ reduced to £250 (ish)...

Go for a Bosch I think is what I am trying to say! my aunt has had one for years with no problems - although they are a 2 person housold now...

    Good luck in your hunt!

we are a 4 person household and in the last say 10 years we've had:

Indesit: - given to us by my sister who needed to clear her house out for unfurnished letting. Needed to change the pump. Worked fine until wife decided to wash paper filled cushions. The drum seized. I did dismantle and fix it but the door seal was nearly gone, so I sold it for £15 and got FOC via employee suggestion scheme.....

Hotpoint: Aquarious model I recall. Lasted around 4 to 5 years without any problems but I had managed to get a new £46 Hoover washing machine via Comet Auctions. So I changed to this.

Hoover: lasted for 3 years with no probls but then wouldn't empty. As I only paid £46 I was not concerned with spending too much to try and fix it. So I managed to get the current Beko off Comet Auctions for £160, but I had to wait for it to arrive so......

Hotpoint: Again. Freebie off Freecycle! Had this in for a few months whilst the Beko arrived and sat in the way for several months. We decided to run this old hotpoint into the ground - and did!

Beko - Still going strong. And it's a good machine.

I don't think I've ever paid even close to the retail price for a machine, and I include several bought via Comet Auctions for our other properties, one bought from a work colleague for our flat, one inherited from a relatives house that I had to empty, one given to me by my sister who had to empty her house and one that I paid for with points earned in a company wide suggestion scheme.

When they start to cause problems, if they are more than a few years old I tend to write them off quite easily. The cost of buying a new one at full price is little more than a day's earnings. I may fix them myself if it is an easy repair, but if it could be the controller I don't want to just pay a call out fee to be told that it cannot be fixed.

If you can afford it that seems to be true, I couldnt budget to that so I went for a Bosch 7kg cant rem the number but it was the cheapest one in that size 1200 spin. I have to say though when it came on Monday I was a bit surprised at the size of the drum. If I hadnt already known it was a 7kg I'd not have noticed any real difference from the 5kg hotpoint I had before... I wanted a bigger one to fit a king sized duvet in but I can't see it fitting safely in there, I haven't tried it yet.

I'm quite pleased with it so far though and was expecting the wash times to be much longer from things I had read but you can program it to suit yourself really, so far so good.

I did not like the hose of all things and ended up using my old one because the plastic nut thing that connects to the cold water pipe was a really soft plastic. Struggling in a tight awkward place to fit it on it went very slightly off the thread thingy so it wrecked it and this lead to it leaking with water when the water was put back on. My old one is a harder plastic and goes on fine.

I did ring bosch though and just told them that it came without a hose I couldnt be bothered going through explanations and they just sent a new one out. The new one is the harder plastic so they may have improved it
    Thanx

good you got a nice new machine, if you are on a water meter you will notice a difference these new machines use far less water, and despite being cold fill nowdays less electricity and they clean better as modern detergents are wrecked by high temps hence cold to hot, not hot to cold as before.

I read after I had ordered it that with the bigger drums you use more detergent so in the long run it costs more but I put the same as I always have and its actually washing them better, I'm guessing maybe as its using less water the detergents not so diluted. 1hr 14 mins for full 7kg 1200 spin on 40 degrees, it wasn't much longer for 60 either. Just fill it up to get the most out of each run. If you want to wash smaller loads though its fine as it just uses the water needed.

I also read washing single items in new washing machines didnt work either at all or properly because of the spin protection balance thing but its been fine too. I even washed a rubber backed washable floor mat from Aldis about the same size as 2 doormats together and that certainly didnt give a balanced wash and it spinned fine

I like to rinse some of my washing beforehand too and found the rinse and refresh is 35 mins but I set it at superquick wash temp 0 degrees instead and thats 15 mins
    Thanx

    Hi Lady_K,

The problems are more apparent the higher the spin speed. ;)

The detergent works and, always has, the same way. It needs a controlled temperature rise to work at it's best, especially bio's.

Hot fill is a waste of time and pretty much has been since the early eighties. The reason that there isn't a hot fill now is due to the energy labelling and the fact that there are pretty much no washers produced in the UK now so the production is pan-European. We're the only odballs in the EU that ask for a hot fill. ;)
