Ubuntu 11.10 no longer offers to upgrade

This OS is now unsupported but I have put off downloading a huge new distro until I am within the library's wifi. However the pop-up never came whilst there, and now doesn't come at all. There doesn't appear to be anything on the Ubuntu Software Centre either. If I download from the official site, how to I get rid of 11.10 without losing my docs? It's the only OS on my Asus Eee.

Seem to have fallen at the first hurdle.
You can easily upgrade over the network with the following procedure. Run the Update Manager application from the Unity Dash
Can't find icon on the dash. Last saw it on the vertical list which appears when the cursor crosses the left edge, but I installed those updates and haven't seen it since.0
