money stolen!

Hi ppl,im new so sorry if this isnt the right place to post this but i need some help or advice!

Im with the coop bank and im a student and have a student account with my 1400 overdraft, which i desparately want to pay off.
My issue is companies like addason lee ( a taxi firm) and galahotles.com
have been taking money out my bank along with other companies.

Most of the money has been refunded. But i want to leave the bank as i dont feel my money is safe there, however they will not let me close the account till my overdraft is payed off which is impossible for me right now, as i have to help family with money issues also.

My question is,can i in anyway get some kind of compensation for this happening, they have given me a new card ive been in the bank 10 times so far due to this happening, i went in today and asked for every bank statement in my history with the bank so i can check how many times this has happened, they said they couldnt print them for me,which i thought was very odd.

Money is so tight, im working during the summer and hopefully when i get back TO UNI and i just cant afford this to keep happening what can i do? please help! thank
Liam

Clearly somebody has stolen your card details and in theory a change of card should ensure that the problem stops.

You can make a Data Subject Access Request which costs up to £10 for all data your bank holds on you but it is likely the problem is relatively recent.

It is also not the fault of the bank that your account has had unauthorised debits so although they are obliged to refund them (and reverse any interest charged as a result of them) they do not have to provide further compensation to you.

You say companies have taken money from your account?
How did this happen? e.g. Direct Debit? Debit card payment?
Did you authorsie these payments? (including CPA in case of debit card deductions)?

Or was this fraudulent activity? If so, any idea how the alleged fraudsters obtained your banking details?
It doesn't matter which bank you are with, if fraudsters obtained your banking details (inclduing security codes as applicable), they could take your money.

You will not be compensated for someone taking money from your account. However you should be able to get a full refund from your bank (assuming you did not authorise the transactions or were negligent in protecting your banking details). Did you notify the bank as soon as reasonable possible of the unrecognised transactions on your account?

Liam, I would ask other banks whether they would be prepared to have your account transferred to them, especially if you are still a student studying at university. Depending on whether you are doing a specialist degree,ie medicine or Law some banks might jump at the chance to get your account. Otherwise it is still worth approaching the banks that offer student accounts as to whether they will transfer the account plus overdraft on the basis that you are studying.....
