Domain and Email

Hi guys,

Sorry if this is obvious, I'm a bit of a technophobe when it comes to websites!

I want to buy a domian name and I want to have email too. Does this happen at the same time, or do I need to purchase email from somewhere else? If there are different ways of getting both domain and email which is easiest/best to do?

I already know I want to use a website creator thing such as weebly or wix, so the hosting is sorted.

Thanks

It's your hosting company that controls your email server, so check out their options.
If you want to SEND email from me@mydomain.com you'll need to go down the route above.

If you simply want to re-direct/forward mail arriving to me@mydomain.com to another email account (eg me@hotmail.com), you don't need an email server.
You can register your domain name with someone like 123-reg and they'll let you forward emails sent to me@mydomain.com free to your me@hotmail.com account.

Not true, say you purchase a domain through any registrar (namecheap/ 123-reg etc) then to set up emails for the domain you need either domain hosting or email hosting. domain hosting by any web host, but if you just want to redirect emails then to get an email as mer@mydomain.com at registrar level you have to order this as this does not come with a domain

    https://www.namecheap.com/email/email-hosting.aspx
    https://www.123-reg.co.uk/email-hosting/

so the best way is to just find a cheap host that can host your domain and then you can set up emails that way

If you want to send email from me@mydomain.com, all you need to do is change the "from" field in your email. You can set it to whatever you like, even a user/domain that doesn't exist.

You just need to set up the domain so it forwards emails addressed to me@mydomain.com to freeuser123@gmx.com (or hotmail or whatever). Then, in your email client, set the default "from" address to me@mydomain.com.

That way, all email going to me@mydomain.com will reach you, and when you send an email, it will also appear to be from that same address... even though you're actually using a free GMX/hotmail account.

If you just want to redirect emails, you shouldn't have to order anything. I just have a domain registered with 123-reg. You can set up email redirection from the control panel -- no need for any hosting with the registrar.
