MSE News: Furniture stores' sale prices probed by OFT

The sofa was available at full-price for 2 months at such and such a store...
...it was in the back, or in a part of the store which was hard to get to.0 -
It's about time, this has been going on for years, with the never ending sales.
One of Ronnie Corbett's monologues in "Two Ronnie's" in the 1980's included a reference to this.
If I remember the line correctly, it went.
I remember the day, It was the day Allied Carpets was not having a sale0 -
Worked Allied for a couple of years, the only time we weren't having a 50% off sale, is when it was a 60% off sale. Prices didn't actually move that much.Unless it is damaged or discontinued - ignore any discount of over 25%0

Nice to see and the laws will need to be changed with possible heavy penalties. If they can operate within the current laws with these bogus "sales", then the laws are outdated.
Loads at it and no doubt they will have their marketing teams looking at other ways of promoting.
We have a family carpet retailer near us who have had "sales" for well 25 years now continuously.
A carpet fitter quoted, "He's been making thousands and thousands of pounds ripping off people for years".
I won't name the firm, but many in the North East will know who it is (adverts in local press, posters on lamp posts etc.).
Off the the Oakfurnitureland "sale". lol
Some great reductions according to the tv ads!!

Are many sales true sales these days? I've not seen any 'wow what a bargain' for years now....0
-
You'd be hard pressed to walk into any one of these stores when there wasn't actually a sale on...0
-
Was it the officers club which got hit with a fine a few years ago for fake sales?0
-
When it comes to fake sales I bet Sportsdirect can challenge any of the furniture retailers.0
-
Just use the following rule:
Unless it's damaged or discontinued don't believe any discount greater than 25%.Unless it is damaged or discontinued - ignore any discount of over 25%0 -
Harvey's do a table & chairs set that I've had my eye on since April, and it has been on a sale price of 399 down from 699 pretty much permanently, until around the start of August I noticed it was back at 699. I knew full well they had only increased it back to its 'normal' price so that when the bank holiday weekend rolled around they could reduce it, which they did as low as 349, at the moment its 399. It's just so obvious what they are upto0
