Help needed please on consumer rights out of warranty

Hi Ive had a couple of h20 x5 steam mops and each has died on me at just over a year old so outside of one year warranty. Customer service at the company have been no help saying I would need to pay for any parts etc to fix. I expected a mop that costs £100 to last longer than a year. I thought I remembered hearing Martin on tv saying there is an act/law that states if an item breaks before a time considered reasonable yet outside warranty the company can be obliged to redeem the problem. Ie. If a new tv has a years warranty and breaks at 13 months thats a lot sooner than would be expected. If this is correct would somebody please tell me the name of the act I refer to and how to go about reading up on it? Thanks in advance

It is the SOGA, Sale of goods act. You claim lies with the company you purchased from, not the manufacturer.

It all comes down to what is a "reasonable" time for a product to last.

If you feel it hasn't been long enough and the retailer won't play ball. Then your only choice is to get an independent report and launch a small claim.

Although what you recall is about right, have a read of MSE's Consumer Rights article to refresh you memory. :D

First of all, where did you actually buy it from ?

did you get it direct from Thane direct, or from another store ?
As its over 6 months since you bought you, you will need to prove that it was inherently faulty.

Go back to them, and Quote the SOGA and ask for it to be repaired free of charge and see what they say. They may just give in and repair it, but they could ask you to prove it
  • Thank you all for your replies. It was from thane direct. I will have a good read through the soga now I know its that and try the company again! Thanks so much agsin

I had a cheaper steam mop, lent it to my daughter who used chemicals in it( your not supposed to) and it broke.if this has broken twice, why not just try and get a refund and read what which report says.
