    No I don't

I've just used cccleaner and its increased my space by almost a gig so thanks for that one.

I've not tried the last link - as the software is discontinued.

Does anyone have any ideas about the 8gb discrepancy or whether this is normal for windows.

Are you referring to Spacemonger v1.4 being discontinued? If so, I wouldn't let that put you off as it's still the best way to check drive space and find where it's being used and I prefer the older version of the software as not only is it free but you don't need to install it to run it.

Also I'd run defrag. I use Auslogics free http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag/

    Ok is it a SSD?

If yes then NEVER! NEVER!! NEVER!!! run defrag on it! ^_^ ok i'm relaxed!!

ok first thing is to make sure the temp is empty!

In the address bar of any folder type:
    %tmp%
That will take youto the temp file folder. delete EVERYTHING that you can

    Then go to c:/Windows/temp/
and delete everything you can. their might be one or 2 files that you can't delete that's ok!

Next move your Page file to the larger of your drives
(basically set the Virtual Memory on c: to "zero" and create create one on another drive) and reboot!

    c- windows \system32 \ config \ systemprofile \ appdata \ local \ microsoft \ windows \ temporary internet files \ content.ie5

delete as much as you can in this content.ie5 folder.
may be easier to do this from a dos prompt.

Is System Restore running ? ... if it is delete all but the most recent restore point, they can take up huge amount of space.

(can be done via Disk Cleanup).

Use Spacesniffer to get a visual representation of what's on the drive
