Living in Torquay?

Options
Hi folks. :)

I am currently hunting for a rental home in the Teignmouth/Dawlish area but would also consider a quiet area of Torquay. Does anyone know what areas are pleasant and which to avoid? I have seen a place in Upton area that I could just about afford but I have no idea what the area is like. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you. :)

One of my workmates knows Torquay well and reckons the Lincombe area is OK, but probably not the cheapest. There are some quite rough parts well worth avoiding!

Thank you for the reply. Could you ask him which areas I should definitely avoid please? Is Upton one of them?

I used to work in Torquay, the places I would avoid are Barton, Hele and Watcombe, also the Abbey Road area. Shiphay, Babbacombe, Cockington are nicer areas, in my opinion.

EA are known to be a little creative with their labelling of areas, so which street are you looking at?

You definitely need to avoid the area south of Union St (Warren Rd etc).

Be aware that if you are travelling for work to Teignmouth/Dawlish, the traffic out of Torquay is horrendous and will take a lot longer than you think.

  • I live in Teignmouth and there's an east/west split here. The west is usually described by EA's as "West Teignmouth" and the east as "Desirable East Teignmouth". This is somewhat true in a broad brush sort of way. Bishopsteignton, to the west of Teignmouth is quite pleasant. Shaldon, over the river, is more up-market.

As Strapped said, the traffic can be horrendous, especially in summer.

I would also add - not wishing to upset anyone - that Torquay has more race-related crime than anywhere else in the area - just something to consider if the OP is non-white.

Thank you all for the replies. :) The place I was considering is in Parkfield Road. You have given me tons of great information of where to look and where to stay away from. I don't drive so I need to be somewhere with a train station, not too far from Exeter. Very limited budget too. Thanks again folks. :)

You'll find Newton Abbot cheaper and a better train service to Exeter than Torquay. But obviously not next to the sea!

Climate change will take care of that but I don't know if the OP is prepared to wait. :D
