Receiving Tax-Credit for variable hours per week

How do the tax-credit people work out how much to pay if I'm working a variable number of hours per week? I'm about to start a new job, but the hours can vary from 20 to 32 hours each week.

Obviously it's all legit and I'll be declaring everything, but not sure how the process works.

First of all you need to check if you are eligible for working tax credit. This depends on age, whether you have children and other factors.

In the link I give there is information about usual hours. For instance, if your employer was asked, what hours would he say you usually work each week? What are the hours on your contract?
