    £15 a month? Rip off ! Thats £180 a year - £2,520, over its 14 year lifespan.

As with a lot of insurance better to 'self insure' and put that £15 a month into a savings account for such emergencies. The likelihood is you'll be far better off - these companies only ever pay out a fraction of what they take in.

£180 wouldn't even pay for half of the cost of my pet this year.

    Insurance is well worth it.

For the insurance industry and vets it is ! The insurance wouldn't exist if they weren't making a healthy profit ie. most are paying more than they ever claim.

Some people pay less on looking after their kids, it's a weird society we live in. Personally I think we need a cull of cats left out after dark to cr*p all over the neighbourhood, with the owners being strung up by the toenails. (Signed, V Meldrew)

Oh dear! Insurance companies wouldn't be operating if they did not make a profit overall (motor insurance excepted). What they offer is CERTAINTY. Instead of possibly (or possibly not) paying out a very large amount that you can't afford, you pay out a much smaller amount (that you can afford) continually.

Look up the history of insurance - the growth of British industry and commercial maritime hegemony can be directly attributable to the fact that underwriters were willing to take on the large-scale risks associated with business expansion.

The cost of my insurance over the last year has been more than repaid in the money I have claimed from them.

If only I could spend as little on kids........

Insuring something which you can afford to replace is probably pointless, which is why I've never had insurance for my mobile phone or my bike, and why I'll probably insure my ageing car third party only next year. However with big or potentially big losses (your home, an expensive car, vets bills) you're not buying insurance because you think it will work out cheaper in the long run (it won't, but in the long run we're all dead) but to avoid the risk losing something which you simply have no means of replacing.

If you can lapse the old Petplan policy and take out a new one for a lower price then do so. Check that they offer is not just for new clients.

As stated before, with a new policy pre existing conditions are excluded and there is normally a 14 day waiting day period for claims.

You could also have a shop around

Call them, I have my dog insured with petplan, I have called them a few times to query what I felt were steep increases and normally they would either cancel the increase, or significantly reduce it.

Our last dog was insured through petplan and he had a hip replacement and an entire leg pin, no problems with petplan paying it, it had no effect on our premiums and if I had done as Mr K is advising my dog would have been put down when it was completely unnecessary. None of my pets have been cheaper to self insure, and only one has had to have costly treatment.
