Cat with diarrhoea

I recently rehomed a cat from a rescue centre. Since I have had him he has had an upset stomach., this has gone on for around 5 weeks now and as he is a house cat living in a small flat you can imagine it is not very pleasant! He has had 3 lots of antibiotics, been starved for 24 hrs etc and still no change, I recently changed his diet to chicken and rice but again no change as yet. I really want to avoid the vet again as my cat is petrified of being put in a cat carrier and everytime I have to literally force him into it thus making him petrified of me aswell. I think he has been ill treated in the past poor little thing. Also I have had a stool sample sent off for tests which came back and the vet gave me some antibiotics to try. Has anyone had this problem with their cat and what did you try?

Foolproof way of sorting the runs in cats or dogs - scrambled eggs with a couple of spoons of cornflour in.
Ive never had a failure yet! Sometimes it takes a couple of meals but to be honest is MILES cheaper than the vet and lots better for the animal.
You often find that rescue animals come with an upset tummy, we had a rescue dog like this last year and within 24 hours he was as right as rain, and never looked back.

It depends what's causing the diarrhoea. If there were suspect bacteria in the sample and this has been treated with an appropriate antibiotic then it's unlikely to be bacterial in origin. Is it fair to assume this animal has been adequately wormed at the correct dose with a product such as Panacur, Drontal or Profender? I'm afraid that for an upset tummy to go on over 5 weeks usually means it will take more than some scrambled eggs to fix, but by all means try it!
If nothing comes to light from samples of poo then it might be worth discussing the case over the phone with the vet intitially. If you explain that the treatment hasn't worked and the cat gets very stressed then you can perhaps work out an approach with the vet - if they know how stressed your cat becomes they might be able to suggest another approach, for example doing a broad range of blood samples to avoid repeat visits, or modifying diet.
I realise you feel like giving up but I doubt this is something you will be able to clear up yourself, and by staying in contact with the vet they will be able to keep track of your cat's progress and help you make decisions about managing the problem. It's really hard for vets when they give a treatment and then the owner never comes back, so they assume it must have worked, but then weeks and months later the owner returns complaining that it didn't help - by which time often investigations into the cause have to be started all over again, from scratch!
Here's hoping you get things dried up!0 -
I have been told that my cat has been wormed etc but I have had advice from an online vet that it is safe to use panacur 3 day treatment just incase any previous treatment didn't fully do the trick. I have also been advised to try Hills ID which is for cats with digestive problems also charcoal tablets crushed over the food help. Failing all this I will take him back to the vets for further advice. The vet is only 5 doors from me, just heart breaking to hear my cat crying out in terror when I put him in this carrier. May pop into the vets tomorrow and mention that the antibiotics have't worked.Friendship is like peeing on yourself: everyone can see it, but only you get the warm feeling that it brings

One of our cats was a rescued stray and the other 2 came from a cat rehoming centre as kittens, with the 2 from the centre they had diarrhoea but we were told it was because they weremn't used to kitten food and it was too rich for them and iit cleared up when we put them on an adult diet including plenty of dry food.
With the 3rd one we had to feed her white fish (really bland diet basically, but she still goes mad and won't leave us alone if we're having fish) desn't have to be expensive, just the supermarket cheapest frozen fish pieces, just microowave cooked and let cool, 1 small portion would last her 2 meals
BUT
The reason she was having diarrhoea was that she was very small and pregnant and the kittens were pressing inside her forcing everything else out,
so how long have you had the cat, is it female, does it seem to be getting bigger even though food is going through very quickly and does it seem to trigger the diarrhoea if you pick the cat up?0 -
I would have a chat with your vet. If hes only a few doors away, and hes anything like my vet, he will gladly discuss this with you without seeing the cat, to discuss what he can do next for you. It does sound like you need further investigation, 5 weeks is a long time to have diarrhoea (sp?) In the meantime, the chicken and rice isnt going to do any harm, its the usual recomendation for pets when they have the runs, I usually add some live natural yoghurt as well.

I have had the cat for about 5 weeks now, male neutered cat. Spoke to my vet again and he recommends using 'Panacur' for 3 days as it not only acts as a wormer but kills a bacteria found in the gut lining which causes digestive problems.Friendship is like peeing on yourself: everyone can see it, but only you get the warm feeling that it brings
