Meaning of Various Searches on Credit Report

We are just trying to understand what some of the searches on my DH's credit report mean.
He recently had a search on his report listed by Barclay's Credit Manager Report as an Audit. I am having trouble finding what audit means. We do have a credit card and current account with Barclays. What could this mean? What is an audit?
There are also several searches listed under organisation as miscellaneous. 6 of them were on the same day and were a mix of audits and enquiry. Do you know why or who this could be? Do debt collection agencies have to identify themselves?
There were also 2 searches over a year ago listed as debt collection agency (enquiry). There are currently no defaults or debts owed showing on his credit report. What is usually the purpose of an enquiry by a debt collection agency?
