Can you only claim once?

Options
I tried to claim my PPI last year by lettering the bank myself. Unfortunately this was rejected and due to family issues I did not have the time to follow up. Can I try again and is there a time limit to follow up with the Ombudsman?

You could try again and hope that they don't cross reference to see if you've complained before. I would expect them to check though, and just refer you back to their previous rejection.

You had six months from the date of the rejection letter to go to the FOS. Only in exceptional circumstances will FOS take on your case outside of the six months.

You have 6 months from receiving the complaint outcome to refer it to the FOS. After that time the bank can bar you from using the FOS. A new complaint should be linked to your existing one and tell you that they have already rejected you. Sometimes it gets missed but you would not expect it to.

What were the family issues? The FOS will overrule the timebar if you can justify the reason why the whole period after that letter made it impossible for you to refer the case to them. e.g. death of a direct family member, incapacity etc.

That is correct but the OP needs to go to FOS now and explain the reasons (with evidence), not argue with the bank again.
