    I would say afetr pulling a stunt like that, that the "possibility" of a big split should become a "guarantee" of a big split.

    He has no valid claim, but if he were to drive off in it and refuse to return it could cause all sorts of problems, I would make sure you keep the V5 and any other documents (and keys) for the vehicle somewhere he can't access.

    Kick him to the kerb! ... well, seems an apt expression in this case.

    If he's trying this on, I'd start making sure all my valuables were safe, also anything I loved, even if it's worthless.
