    hi Kim ,
Have you thought about getting some of that wipe clean stuff what they make table cloths out of to place over the top just while the kids are around.? You could put it over the top and fasten under neath with a clothes peg. ;)

If you have got a Dunelm by you, they will either have the material, or some cheapy plastic tablecloths you can adapt.

OR - if you want to go with your original idea, buy a machine dylon dye and dye them (as you say they washed OK). I did this (after taking advice on here :D ) on a dress I had bought and got a fantastic result.

  • John Lewis stock it by the metre in the Furnishing Fabric dept. allow 60cm for each pair of chairs for seat bases only. It is not actually rated for furnishing use, as it is not flame retardent, don't worry about this as the fire regs were designed to stop the large amounts of foam in sofas catching fire and turning into nasty smoke, the foam in your chairs will be combustion modified so there is no problem. Very important is to get them to put it on a roll as it creases immediatly and permanantly, they are happy to do this, in fact they will probably ask "rolled or folded?"

The product is refered to as PVC tablecovering, also called oilcloth by the older generation. In fact you can get any fabric PVC coated for a price, not been in the business for a few years but £5-£7 min 3 metres plus cost of fabric and waste of 10% rings a bell.
Unless it is damaged or discontinued - ignore any discount of over 25%

Yes I agree that dylon works great, I have saved a few stained light coloured clothes from the bin with this! and its great for a change. I have used it on our sofa cover (though it took a few boxes) and cushion covers, tablecloths, clothes etc. Its really easy.
