When things don't go according to plan . .

Ever done something which seems fated to go wrong? I'm not talking life threatening or dire consequences here, but where things just, well , go wrong.

We've been gutting the ensuite and downstairs toilet, doing a lot of the work ourselves but with an electrician and plumber (relevant!). Ensuite first.

Couple of days later the basil plant in the kitchen is overflowing. OH had been over-watering it as he'd complained I hadn't done it, or so I thought. That night OH went upstairs ahead of me while I looked for my book. Thinking he'd left the tap running, I went into the kitchen in time to see water pouring from the spotlights. The soil pipe had been moved slightly when the new toilet was put in a slightly different place. Strike 1.

After a delay, we started downstairs. We had left the new basin in its box for protection. When the plumber opened the box, we'd been sent the wrong basin, one that we couldn't use. Strike 2.

Okay, it wasn't the end of the world, we'd get it changed, it just meant a bit more delay. I phoned the company we'd bought it from, using the phone number we had from emails. "Number not recognised". Tried their online number - not recognised. Tried their 0845 number and it rang . . .and rang . . . and rang. Something felt not right. I googled XXX and liquidation. The company had gone into liquidation two weeks previously. Strike 3.

Fast forward to today. The plumber arrived to finish the job. He called me through to look at the WC unit panel which was bulging - and wet! The panel had been put (all right, I moved it) on the floor where some water had leaked and it soaked the water up just like a sponge. Strike 4.

The new panel will take several weeks to come as they are only made to order and not kept in stock  .

As I said, not life threatening, but Aargh!

I'm sure many of you will have similar tales to tell . . .
. . .I did not speak out

Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me..

Keep telling yourself it will be worth it when it is all finished. I feel your pain OP having been through similar when renovating my previous home. Ever seen the film 'The Money Pit', that pretty much mirrors what my life was like.
The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.

most of us can relate to that; the trick is what one learns from it.
    - when you use tradesmen, you are the quality inspector, check what they do, go looking for issues.
    - always check deliveries both externally and by opening them on arrival, preferably before the deliverer leaves.
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....
