Bubble over shower drain cover

Does anybody have trouble with these new type of shower drain covers? The trouble I'm having is that unlike the old shower drain which seemed more like a grill, the new shower drain has a cover which seems to restrict the waste water in the way that the water seems to form a bubble over the cover and the waste water just builds up in the shower tray. If you then swirl your foot around the drain cover area you sort of burst the bubble and the water then gushes away. (Which shows that it is not a blockage issue) The shower has been in for around 18 months and although not a big problem for me, the rest of my family forget to do this and end up paddling around in a pond as they put it.
The cover is similar to this one:-

I have one like that and apart from a bit of suds gathering round it the water goes down just fine, could it be its not installed correctly ? I just swish the suds around with my foot and they do disappear but its only bubbles not water that gathers..

 Poor design, I would think from the look of it, and from what you say, its air locking under the cap, and from the picture there are small holes that SHOULD? prevent this, but my guess is they would block very easily:(

Its either get rid, regularly clean the holes out, or maybe enlarge the holes to prevent the air lock OR the holes from easily clogging :)

Actually there were no holes in the cap initially so I drilled a few holes and it seemed to go slightly better if anything.
What I was hoping for is something that could take the place of the cover and just push in but with a lot more holes in it, like a grill of some sort, as everything seems fine without the cover on.
In case you ask I'd rather not leave the cover off as I'd be more likely to get blockages with hair etc.

Dont think you will get anything that will take its place, manufacturers dont usually make things that will mix n match these days, not without a complete replacement
    :(

As the holes you have already drill have helped, maybe a few more or larger would make it even better?

Understand that the cover makes it esthetically acceptable, but what does it look like with the cover off, can you put a photo up with the cover off?

I just realised yours has holes I didn't notice that before, mine has no holes and the water just runs down the holes around the sides straight into the waste with no problem at all..

Thats what I thought but on a closer look what appears holes in the picture are actually dimples ;)
The OP has said though that they have put holes in the cap though to try to solve the problem.

There is of course another possibility as to why the trap and the tray outlet are not clearing the water, and which could also cause an air, or vacuum lock, and that is IF the waste pipework run from the shower is poor and doesn't have enough run on it :(

I think maybe the OP should look further at the pipework installation, and maybe also explain how it runs from the source to the termination :)

I'm pretty sure the pipework is OK as without the cover on everything works fine without any build up of water.
The only thing I've seen so far is some kind of cover from America on e-bay which just fits inside the drain with four bendable tags but looks more like a grille with a lot more holes in.
