Cheap paint? Decorating cheap as possible?

Options
Hi,

Does anyone have any suggestions on how/where to get cheap paint? We've just found a new house to rent and got a bit knocked off our monthly rent as the house is in need of 'sprucing up' shall we say. Anyhow, we have the landlord's permission to decorate but it obviously needs to be in fairly neutral colours.

The walls are all fairly even etc, it's simply a case of making it look less 'tired'. Any ideas on how to make small statement pieces too? Any ideas more than welcome!

Thanks

See if you have a re-use charity near you. I donate my nearly full tins of surplus paint to them and they sell them on for just a few pounds. I'll be surprised if there isn't one near you.

It's not worth buying ultra cheap paint as you have to give more coats.

Cheap paint, 4 coats, 4 times the labour

One coat paint may be costlier but more economical in the long run.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Please, please, make sure that you get the landlord's permission, IN WRITING, to do this paint job.

You wouldn't be the first tenant to spruce up a place at their own expense and then find, at the end of the tenancy, that the landlord conveniently 'forgot' he'd given permission and either insists that the walls be returned as they were or docks your deposit to allow for redecorating costs!

I'd also second the view that buy cheap paint, buy twice (or more) Good quality paint is always cheaper in the long run.

My daughter just got a new rented flat today she does have landlords permission and rent isnt as much as it perhaps should be. If you have a Boyes store they sell paint reasonable priced I agree go for good quality. They sell Leyland paint which isnt bad I use it many times mainly Satin. B&Q sometimes have large tubs (10litres) of emulsion by Crown for around £14

The Range (shop) isnt badly priced for paint I tend to buy Johnstones paint from there as it hard to source locally and they make good gloss paint.

Leyland trade range - all the fun, a fraction of Dulux price.
Freecycle/Freegle (caveat - paint is explosive so please be careful.)

Yep Leyland gives good coverage and its pretty cheap.
Also its worth checking your local B&Q for special offers, last time I bought paint they had a special on Dulux and I got big trade tubs of dulux silk emulsion for about £18 each.

you can often get 5/10 litre magnolia/white paints from B&Q we've use them a few times, but they do need a few quotes if the wall's are dark colours.
  • B&M stores - I got 10 litres of Crown emulsion for under £14 on Tuesday - they had it in magnolia and white. I got mine from the Burnley store - I think you's need to go to one of their bigger sized stores to get it
