My thanks to the above posters about cooking kidney beans.

In regards to using the pressure cooker to cook other vegetables, it's still of concern letting them sit in water (im that used to cooking them in my steamer).

Thought about using a cooker cutter (metal) as a make-shift rivet. Do you think that would be ok? Saves me having to drive back to the store.

Your veggies shouldn't need to sit in water (I also steam my veg in the PC). Check your manual for the minimum liquid you need, and put this in the pan. Then put the trivet on top - the water level should still be below the trivet, so you can pop your vegetables on the trivet to steam and they don't sit in the water.

You probably could use a metal biscuit cutter - I have used a Pyrex plate before successfully. As long as you use at least the minimum amount of liquid specified in your manual, you should be fine.
  • The trivet that came with my prestige smartplus PC is simply a thin metal V shape piece of wire.

Hi everyone, hope you all had a good Christmas.

I was lucky enough to receive my first ever pressure cooker for Christmas (thankyou Mum :) ). But having never used one before and there being no recipe book included Im a little bit stuck.

I have had a trawl through the index and although there are pressure cooker threads there dont appear to be any recipes as such.

I want to make the cow pie recipe from the hairy bikers
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/granny_tammys_cow_pie_05632
and wanted to try the pressure cooker for the meat part rather than use the oven for the 2hours it says

I have the kuhn rikon pressure cooker so would I just use the 2nd line pressure? and does 20 mins at that pressure sound about right? Ive tried looking on the miss vicki site but would rather go by someone on here.

Sorry about the long post, hope someone can help

Hi all - hope everyone got there hearts desire from Father Christmas

I was really lucky - like Razra, I too received a kuhn rikon pressure cooker. I have never used one before and really have no idea how to use it.

It was well packed, but the instructions are for a variety of different types and not clear, well not to me anyway :rotfl:

Mine is the one from Lakeland, a duromatic, inox 5L . The pressure valve, was in separate pieces in the box - do you just put the spring onto the thread (the red valve bit) and then thread it thru the lid and screw the cap on the top ?

Sorry to be so dense but a little scared of my new pressie :o

Thank you (Penelope Penguine & Cooking Mama) so much for the links - had looked quickly on the Kuhn uk site without too much joy. Thinking of trying new potatoes first.

However, I too would love to make the Hairy Bikers recipe - (got their book from Santa Paws ! ) Perhaps you would be kind enough to update us with your progress Razra ?

Thanks, and sorry fopr my long post

Just popping back to say, I did it for 20 mins at the second red line pressure and it turned out lovely (still did it for the 30 mins in the oven afterwards for the pastry to cook).

I sort of 1/4 the ingredients, I say sort of cos Im a bung it all in kinda cook LOL. It was nice but the gravy was far too much for the small amount of meat I had, but that could be because I didnt measure just covered over the meat like the recipe said to, so will prob use much less next time. Would also add some mushrooms to bulk it out a bit.
But other than that for a first ever go with a pressure cooker I am impressed.

Currently trying a turkey carcass soup which if it works I will post the receipe.

Not as scary as I always thought!
Have also ordered these two books book from Amazon so I have some recipes to [STRIKE]follow[/STRIKE] change :)

Hi shepherdgirl, mine was already assembled so I cant really tell you sorry, but Im pretty sure I saw in the book how to assemble it. If not if you take it to Lakeleand they may be able to do it for you as their customer service is fab :)

PS thats the same size one that I have, so heres to experimenting together LOL

I have one of those lamb shanks, cook from frozen -boil in the bag. Can I do this in the pressure cooker and reduce the time ? If so, how long for ? OH wants to cook it now.

You *probably* could - use 1/3rd of the cooking time then check for doneness.

Actually, I'd check it after 1/4 of the cooking time just to be careful you don't obliterate it!
