I've always liked CapitalOne as they pay 1% cashback and I always pay in full at the end of each month.
Last year I receive a letter from them advising that they suspect some cards may have been compromised and a replacement would arrive soon. Sure enough, the replacement card turns up, everything fine. Even thought at the time "Well, at least they're on the ball". Card Valid from Dec 2012 - expires in Jan 2016
Now I receive a letter with the exact same wording and a replacement card turns up. However, new card is also "PayPass" or a contactless card as well as Chip and Pin. Don't need it, don't want it, will never use it (intentionally).
When I called them to activate the card I did ask if the contactless system could be turned off because I don't trust it (already stories coming out of people paying unwittingly when the card is still in their wallet/purse) only to be be told "No, sorry, can't do that.
So, the two scenarios are:-
a) CapitalOne have appalling security and cards are being compromised within 8 months
b) CapitalOne are just pushing the new contactless cards out and using the "fraud" ploy as an excuse.
I know I shouldn't worry really and that worse things happen in life, but just venting my frustration :rotfl:

There's a third option.
Capital One's fraud protection verges on the paranoid. I purchased something from Microsoft recently, at a value of less than £15, and before the confirmation email arrived, Capital One's fraud department was phoning me up to confirm the transaction.
I'm actively wary of using my Capital One card, to be honest. Although I've never had a letter about a compromised card, I do seem to get more phone calls from them each month than my own mum.0 -
I am happy to say that I will never willingly accept a card which can be debited for a transaction without me using a pin number.
Some useful "how to avoid losing a customer" advice there for all financial companies. :cool:
Any chance of the bold Martin taking up this issue?

That's all well and good until all cards introduce the feature.
Obviously the CC companies want this used because it means they get a cut of every transaction where it is involved. (Which will, of course, lead to a small increase in the cost of goods generally.)
Unless the government (or, more likely knowing how useless they are, the EU), force the companies to introduce a consumer opt out, I'm afraid it is the way of the future.There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0
