French bank account woes

Hi all
I am having issues with my French bank (BNP) - we just moved back to the UK after a year there.
Initially (stupidly) i ordered quite a chunk of sterling to take back with me - but decided to cancel the order since the charges were equivalent to €250. I went into the city bank where I was to collect the order before the designated collection date and asked to cancel - which was accepted.
I then went to my local branch to perform an international transfer.
This was 2 weeks ago. Up until tuesday, the money had left my French account but no sign of it in my UK account. After querying it with the local french branch, they have said the transfer was refused - and to ask UK why. UK said "missing info (name and/or account number)".
The UK bank is N&P building society and they use Barclays for international payments.
Yesterday most of the money dropped back into the French account. I say most - it was shy of €390. When i queried BNP, they said it was the difference from the original sale and the buy back rate.
I am absolutely gobsmacked. How can i be liable for that? I gave them all the correct details, its their system that is failing.
To add salt, the local agency is now telling me the original cash order cannot be cancelled, and i am to pay the original fee + the sell back fee at a total of €500.
What are my rights here? Who is to blame for the transfer fiasco?
N&P have told me they are looking into where the greedy little mitten appeared...

losses due to you changing your mind are probably down to you. I think you sense this as you admit it was stupid.
As to the second transaction what paperwork did you get from the bank? last time I did a transfer out of UK via my bank they filled in a form with all the details and let me check it before signing it, so I could ensure all the details were on it (I had checked up beforehand to find out what was needed).
Having said that, it was a few years ago, I would never use a bank now, instead use an FX broker (currencyfair.com in my case, there are others)The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....0
