    Thankyou so much!

After contacting the insurance in writing, they have imediately agreed to pay the £250+ that they had held back.
This means my OH can actually afford to buy his own car without me subbing him!

P.S. New car is already checked for previous write offs!!

Thank you so much. It's a big difference for us. Very happy :-)

If you feel they unreasonably delayed the claim or handled this badly there's nothing stopping you sending them an "Official complaint" which they are obliged to treat seriously and investigate properly.

It may result in compensation of £50 to £100 and hopefully it might make them handle this exact situation in the correct way and follow the Ombudsmans ways on written off cars.

When making your decision bear in mind they should already know the link I provided very well. They're either ignorant of it or were purposely trying it on to save money.

If sending a complaint letter, keep it polite and concise to achieve the best results

Gets my vote...sticking a complaint in will introduce a "downside" (either via compensation or FOS fee) which might discourage them from doing the same in future
