Crunching? noise when braking.
Car is fitted with 4 disc brakes. When you brake lightly and come to a stop there is no noise from the braking system. When you brake heavily you can hear a crunching type of noise before it stops. This does not happen all the time.
Have inspected the discs through the alloy wheels and they all look fne. No scoring or worn discs. Car has done 20k.
The brake wear indicator lamp goes off when you release the handbrake. Does not come on when braking.
I don't think the pads are worn out otherwise it will be making a noise everytime i brake.
What do you think?

Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problems Well at least i learn something on the way

Best get the front pads checked or just remove the wheel and have a look yourself. They can wear out in 20K potentially. If the 'crunchy' noise is metal to metal, you will damage your discs.0

my money would be on pads too. Get front & rear checked/changed.
My car & van have rear discs and a recurring problem on both is rear pads wearing out because the handbrake mechanism gets "sticky"0 -
I know its impossible to give a long distance diagnosis, especially with a noise. However when you get it checked it sounds more like normal abs kicking in that you may not yet be familiar with on harder, low speed applications. If the pads were low and the disc rusty, more likely for it to be an even more pronounced noise under gentle braking.0

Sounds more like an issue with a suspension component to me, sudden weight shift leading to two components coming together due to a failed bush possibly.
Rubber spring seat gone is another possible.
All a bit unusual for a 20k car though.
Chasing noises is a pain in the !!!!. Owning a 1987 MR2 and a 1995 Celica I've had plenty of practice. :rotfl:0 -
Could it be ABS activation? that often sounds like a metallic or crunching noise as it activates, possibly coupled with pulsation felt through the brake pedal or steering wheel.0

Thanks for the info.
When driving gently today the brakes does not make a noise. Only does when braking hard. It seems to come from the rear. Can feel no pulsating effect on brake pedal.Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problems Well at least i learn something on the way0 -
I'll put a fiver on pads0

I recently had a crunching almost metal on metal sound from the front brakes combined with a funny feeling through the brake pedal. I checked pads and disks which turned out to be fine, it was a faulty ABS sensor. New sensor fitted and chrunching noise went away.
Not got a clue why a faulty sensor would create the noise and odd feeling though.0 -
Well found a quiet place to do a test. In reverse no matter at what speed no crunching. In forward motion with gentle braking no problem. With heavy braking the crunching noise only comes when it just comes to a standstill.Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problems Well at least i learn something on the way0

Hard to know what you mean by crunching noise. If it sounds like a metallic crunching/pulsating/valve activation noise, and appears to be coming from the engine bay I'd put money on it being the ABS module activating.
You haven;t mentioned what kind of car it is.
TBH I'd take it to a dealer who sells that kind of car if new, or a trusted local independant garage if older, to get the brakes checked over by someone who knows what they're doing. you can't be too careful with brakes, and whilst it could be all in order, any faults need to be investigated.
You're never going to diagnose a problem like that over an internet forum from limited description.0
