RAC fuel card

Hello Everyone,

I have just recieved the RAC visa card preloaded with £12.50 (or at least it will be when it's been activated). It was issued as a goodwill gesture by RAC as they messed up when I bought their breakdown cover.

I thought it would be simple.... use the £12.50 preloaded on the card and then put the card away/never use it again OR just cancel the account. I havent activated the card yet. Having read the T&C's, it says "the card distributor will reload the card from time to time". It also says "£2 per month admin charge".

Can anyone make sense of the above two quoted statements? I'm not sure why it says they'll reload it from time to time and is there a monthly £2 charge for simply having this card??

Many thanks in advance!

There are presumably terms supplied dwith the card. If you don't agree to them, don't use or even authorise the card.

If you are not happy with the resolution the RAC has given you in relation to your complaint to them that is something you need to take up with them.

It does seem odd to send you a load of terms & conditions and expect you to enter into any agreement with any third party to resolve a complaint you have with the RAC. Could they not just have sent you a cheque instead to spend on whatever you wish?
  • Thanks for replying Wywth,

When I took out the breakdown cover just a couple of months back, the RAC sent a letter saying they'd made a mistake within their advertising. They said that [at the time of purchasing the cover] their offer was £20 M&S vouchers and not free fuel. Then I got another letter from them saying 'as a gesture of goodwill we are giving you £12.50 of free fuel'. But I'd never complained about the mix up. I was happier was the M&S vouchers anyway!

They needent have offered to send me the £12.50 fuel card....

I recieved the vouchers and then the card not long after. I thought I may as well use the £12.50 of free fuel ... it's 'free' after all!

Along with the card was a covering letter saying I had to activate the card... which I though odd and I looked more closely.

Yes, I would have been easier for them so send a £12.50 cheque, perhaps offer £12.50 off 'next years' policy, or send an extra £12.50 in M&S vouchers, but they chose the fuel card ......

    What a coincidence!

I joined the RAC earlier this year when they were running a £50 fuel reward promotion. Well, we waited and waited and it never came. When I contacted them I was told that because we had not wanted a reoccurring payment then we weren't entitled to it! This is despite being told over the phone that we were!
They listened to the call and agreed with us that we were correct and said a fuel card would be sent out. Instead a letter has arrived giving us details of a special website, RACfueloffer, and of course the login details they have provided do not work anyway. Fortunately on reading the T&C's I'm glad they didn't.
To activate the card we would have to phone an 0844 number, then we only get £12.50 per quarter, then we only get that if the policy is still in force! As we have missed two quarters (most people would miss one) we would only get £25. Plus, they don't say where the card can be used.

The hoops that need to be jumped through are outrageous and that together with the T&C's would stop many people from claiming anyway!
I think this is an 'offer' that should be investigated.
We only joined the RAC because they gave us a much better deal than our previous long time supplier of breakdown cover so the offer wasn't the reason we moved but I would imagine there are a lot of unhappy people out there!
I have emailed the RAC so once I get a reply then I'll let you know.

I received the RAC prepaid fuel card about 7 days ago with the preloaded £12.50.

Admittedly there were several hoops to jump through by registering online and calling them to activate (you needn't use the 0844 number as I found on alternative on saynoto0870.com).

I spent the £12.50 today and because I was aware of the £2 charge I rang today to cancel and did it easily over the phone.

There is no cancellation charge if cancelled within a certain period which escapes me, I think 14 days, check the T's and C's.

A bit of a fuss but saved £12.50 on this week's fuel spend!
