iPad Power Consumption

I have an iPad 3 and use the power plug & USB lead that came with it to charge it. However if I use the iPad while it's still plugged into the mains (and charging) the battery power is still going down. This isn't a new thing, its always happened.

For example; its been on charge overnight and this morning it was showing 100% charged. I've checked my emails, read an online newpaper, bit of Facebook and now reading MSE site; so no video, games or music etc, just IMO some light surfing, but the battery is now showing 91% and is still going down (slowly).

I expect it to go down if just using just battery power or maybe if I was using a third party charger, but why would an iPad use more power than what it can draw from the mains, I'd expect it to be charging it (slower) while I'm using on the mains.

Any ideas why this is happening and how to stop it....???

Thanks

  • I have an ipad 3 and this definitely doesn't happen to me.

No matter what I do with it when it's plugged into the wall it remains at 100%, using the charger and plug that came with it.

Not that that helps much I'm afraid, but maybe your charger isn't working properly?

It could be that your battery isn't performing properly - maybe you didn't fully charge it originally?

Try to discharge the iPad completely every now & again, so it turns itself off. Then fully charge it WITHOUT USING IT until it is fully charged. This 'should' improve the battery life.

Failing that, as crispy_chris says the charger could be faulty.

sounds like your using the wrong charger
This happens when you use the iPhone charger on the iPad.

Check the type of charger it is and see if it is the 10/12w one

With laptops, it's actually common practise for the charger not to be powerful enough to run the computer completely. Instead, it's supplemented by the battery power. Anyone who plays complex 3D games on a laptop will have experienced this.

I suppose, therefore, your iPad could be suffering the same issue, but it doesn't sound like your pushing it to the extent that you'd expect to see this behaviour. I agree with Cycrow: you may be using the wrong charger. If you definitely are, then you should get in touch with Apple, either via a call to AppleCare or a trip to a Genius Bar.
