    Because sometimes the pieces of pole are more than half the total length and therefore it's impossible to get the join in the middle. I found the telescopic ones to be rubbish- had them up for about a month before I chucked them all in the bin. I found it so much better buying an over-sized pole and trimming it down with hacksaw (think I actually used an angle grinder- possibly overkill)
