Car Dealer lost log book

I am in the process of buying a 3 yr old car from a main Ford dealer but they have lost the log book of the car. It has so far taken 4 weeks to get sorted with a new one and I have been messed around in the process (I still have no idea when it will be ready). Should I be concerned about the lost log book (eg. stolen vehicle or log bk loan) and can I ask them to guarantee in writing that this is not the case? It is a main dealer so I would have thought they are reputable but they have not been straight with me so I must admit that I don't believe a word any car salesman tells me anymore. I am a single mum of a young baby and went to a main dealer hoping not to have any hassle! They asked for my money up front but at least I have managed to get that back now until the car is ready when I will pay them, part x my car and try and get some sort of compensation. they are not agreeing to anything yet. Thanks for any advice!

What does your marital situation have to do with buying a car?

They still have a deposit of £250 and having got this far I don't want the hassle of starting again. I am also in a courtesy car from them now as I'd swapped the insurance on my old car and couldn't change it back

In that case, enjoy the courtesy car and let them mess about, the wear and tare and mileage is on them

Exactly, this seems to be costing them far more than it is costing you.

I'm sure with a main dealer who has accepted responsibility to the extent of giving you a courtesy car, you'll be fine.

But you could ask for 2 things:

    1. A Vehicle History Confirmation Certificate which will give you loads of info - number of keepers, outstanding finance, plate transfer, VIN match, stolen vehicle, etc. etc.

    2. An NMR (National Mileage Register) Confirmation.

If thy don't want to do it - ask why.
