H Samuel - Jewellery Identification Report

I got engaged on Monday and the ring I picked was from H Samuels and had been ordered in the week before as it wasn't in stock in store.

One of the reasons I picked it was because it was a "certified diamond" and according to their website came with a Jewellery Identification Report. However this isn't the case it seems. When my fiance collected the ring he forgot to ask about the report so the next day I contacted H Samuels asking how we obtain it but their response was that only their "Forever Diamond" Collection comes with the Report.

On their website if you follow links to view their "certified diamonds", my ring does come up in the results so I feel I have been misled if it doesn't come with a report.

H Samuels aren't being any help so I have now emailed Head Office.

If you go onto the H Samuels website and click on Customer Services and then the Diamond Buyers Guide there is link on the right hand side that states "View Certified Diamonds", if you click on that then filter by Rings my ring does come up but I fear they are going to say its a website error as they are adamant my ring doesn't come with a report.

Considering the ring was originally £1,300 expect it to come with a report - failing that they should pay for a report be done.

What are your views of this? Thanks

  • Do you have a link to the ring? Did you pay £1,300 for it?

Will they allow you to return it for a full refund?

You are buying from retailer and the ring is going to have a fraction of the value that you paid for it.

Make printouts of everything on their website that shows your ring should come with a certification for the diamond.

Go to the store and cancel the order based on the fact they won't provide what they advertised.

Go somewhere else - I'd suggest an independent manufacturing jeweller - if you live near Birmingham go to the Jewellery Quarter and get something made up to suit

It's not a valuation report, its an identification report issued by the International Gemmological Institute confirming size, clarity, weight etc.

The report itself isnt that much of an issue, whilst IGI are not well regarded I am sure like the other companies they will issue you with a replacement certificate if necessary.

If you get a very strong magnifying glass and look on the girdle of the stone (the flat bit on the side) you should find a code engraved into the side of the stone. Assuming you do find the code you can enter it plus the weight of the stone onto http://www.igiworldwide.com/search_report.aspx and it will give you the details of the report.

If you cannot find any code on the side then it isnt certified

Did you buy in store or online? Its a little unclear from your post. If in store did they show you anything in there to say it was certified or did you see it on the website and then simply went instore to get it and didnt mention the certified part?

There may be more issues if there was nothing instore that stated it was certified but really from a goodwill view point they should simply take the item back as a return.

Certification probably adds around 15% the the value of a stone. Based on the stats given for the ring on the samuels website a similar stone can be bought from blue nile online for £292 but certified by the much more respected GIA. Realistically at this point certified or not is not much of an issue (but obviously if sold as certified it should be).

Get your refund and buy somewhere much better like the birmingham jewellery quarter or blue nile (which can do the same ring and stone as yours but in 18ct white gold or platinum for £757)
