Car insurance company not responding

Dear All,

I am new to the forum and kind of new to the country as well. Came here like 6 months back.

I got a small used car about 3 months back and got an insurance from a company called Clements. Now, recently about 15 days back I have sold my car and I want the insurance to be closed.

The problem is that I have emailed the insurance company, talked to them many times, they always say they will cancel on the phone but they do not do it. I have been hanging over with this for last 15 days.

Any pointers as to what should be the best way to deal with this. I have about 5 emails sent to them and 2 phone calls.

I am just wondering if it will be sufficient enough to get the Direct debit cancelled?

Any ideas will be appreciated.

    Before you cancel you need to return your certificate. Send it back by recorded delivery and ask them to confirm your instructions to cancel.

    Cancelling a payment doesnt cancel a service, you will find that they void the policy for non-payment which would then be something you must declare to all future UK insurers for the rest of your life (depending on how long you intend to stay here this may or may not be much of an issue).

    Send a letter of complaint to them stating they have not followed your instruction to cancel. Enclose the certificate of insurance and confirm you have done so in the complaint letter.

    Either send it by recorded delivery or send it by normal post and get a certificate of posting from the post office.

    Once you have had a policy cancelled, then you are bound to declare it when asked if you have ever had a policy cancelled when applying to insurers. Its a yes or no question.

    Any case where an insurer has forcibly cancelled the policy (rather than you requesting). The only exception would be on a total loss payment for a vehicle which is arguably not a cancellation but a natural conclusion of the policy.

    I rang/emailed 15 insurers and 9 out of 12 (3 non responses/didn't call back) said that it doesn't need to be declared.


    The question was basically "do I have to declare a policy cancelled by a previous insurer when it has been cancelled due to non payment (meaning direct debit).


    A dichotomy one might say.

    Search this forum, you will find several people asking how to deal with the fact their insurance has sky rocketed after an insurer cancelled for non-payment.

    You MUST declare it if the question is the standard: "Have you or any of the drivers ever had insurance declined, cancelled or special terms imposed?"

    If the insurer decides to rate on it is a totally different matter, the majority do from my professional experience

    Actually, they send me the certificate on the email. I can send them a letter with the copy of that certificate. I guess thats what I need to do now.

    Un-necessary waste of my time when this should be very very simple.
