There's this page on the main MSE webiste:
http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/credit-cards/cancel-unused-cards
which lists how long it takes before you count as a new customer for credit cards at various banks. Does anyone know what the situation is with opening bank accounts, particularly with Halifax?

There wouldn't be any such rule, because you don't have to be a new customer. But for the switching incentive there's a specific rule that you must not have already received a switching incentive since January 2012.
I'd like to know the fine detail on that, because I applied for a switch in Jan 2012, but I didn't get the money until months later. But I don't suppose they spell it out."It will take, five, 10, 15 years to get back to where we need to be. But it's no longer the individual banks that are in the wrong, it's the banking industry as a whole." - Steven Cooper, head of personal and business banking at Barclays, talking to Martin Lewis0 -
Ah, yes, just had a closer look, I hadn't realised you didn't need to be a new customer, you just had to use the switching service. I'm sure I'd seen adverts previously saying you had to be a new customer; I guess that's changed.0
