Tablet to t.v.

When I connect an Android tablet to my television, I've tried with two tablets and t.v.s, using HDMI cable the sound transmits from both the t.v.'s speakers and also those of the tablets. I've also tried with another hdmi cable, just the same.
Doing the same with a laptop it's fine, the laptop's speakers mute as they should.
Any ideas as to how to stop this happening? It's annoying because of the "echo" effect with the tablet speakers. Of course, reducing the tablet volume also reduces the t.v. volume accordingly!

As a quick fix, just plug in some cheap earbud headphones (Poundland sell them if you don't have any) you won't hear the sound from them and they will mute the speakers.
Strange though, when I use my tablet on the TV with hdmi the playback volume on the tablet doesn't affect the volume to the TV over hdmi.0 -

Yes, that muted the speakers without affecting the volume output. Thanks. Why didn't I think of that?!
Instead of ear/headphones in future I'll just plug in a 1.5mm jack to mute the speakers.
The tablet vol. control does operate the t.v. vol., I thought that most odd too.0 -
You haven't mentioned which tablet it is (there are umpteen Android tablets) or which Android version you're on. There MAY be a setting somewhere in Settings that you can fiddle with, it may only be active when you have it plugged in too. There's a lot to dig through in there!0
