Removing old carpet glue from wood- Help!

Hello!
I am in the process of trying to sand down my previously carpeted stairs but cannot seem to remove the marks left by the glue that was used to fix the carpet down. There wasn't any grippers, just glue so there are quite a few marks left over.
There are some quite dark marks on a lot of the treads and I have tried all different grades of sandpaper (with and without an electric sander), also tried sticky stuff remover, white spirit, nitromors, steel wool, warm soapy water etc and can't think of anything else that will do the trick.
Any suggestions welcomed!

What about WD40? Stinks a bit - but might do the trick? Try on a small area first though, in case it bugg3rs the whole lot up!0

I would use a cabinet scraper. it is a piece of semi flexable metal about 100mm X 50mm has a slight burr on it. Also you could try a sharp chisel and use as a scraper. Just use it on the areas that need it.The measure of love is love without measure0

try sealant stripper as used in schools on floors. this gets rid of most things nip in and ask the caretaker what he uses i bet he will give you a bit to try.0
