Just to say many thanks for all the help.

Im back up now after a few problems reinstalling, just adding office, AV, etc.

I certaily will also look into the backup solutions suggested. Last backup of my websites was 2 months ago and not done a great deal since then, howevor some inportant invoices were not backed up. Ordered caddy from ebay( thanks again) and willl see if I have any luck.

Just read the post about warranty and you might be right, but too late now I suppose. Its more time that Ive lost than money anyhow.

    Cheers

    Even better news.

I put the HDD in the caddy and nothing happened, it wouldn't even see it.
After a bit of Googling I tried this.

I opened the HDD and inside its a bit like a record player with a needle.
The "needle" was stuck, so I moved it to the side, look for a you tube video if anyone reading this is thinking of trying.

I put the HDD in the caddy and was able to get all my documents back. Out of curiosity I put the HDD back in the laptop, but it wouldn't boot up.

Might not work for all, but it worked for me.

    Just one more thing please.

As mentioned the HDD I installed was from an old laptop, and I fear the same may happen again one day.

I have ordered a new HDD and I want to make a clone of this HDD, so if it fails again its simply a case of switching drives.

Using the caddy, any suggestions to the best software please. As I will only be using it the once something that is simple to use.
I was thinking of using the back up function built into windows but I have a feeling that wont work?

    Thanks

see post 2, disk image and a boot cd is better than clone (because you can backup many times to one disk), but it does both.

slight horizontal shake can sometimes fix a stuck head, removing the cover introduces dust and fingerprint contamination to the platter, and press to hard on the head = head crash.
