Buying a New Car
Options
I am currently looking to buy a new car, I have found a Renault Clio which is 6 years old with mileage under 30K, it's a lovely drive and comes with a 12 month warranty. The dealer has it on for £4500 which after searching on the Glass guide (free service) says it's almost top of the price range. The price should range from £3700 up to £4600, I guess the dealership would argue that the mileage is particularly low hence the price being high. Anyway, there is no evidence that the timing belt has been changed and having had one snap in a previous car this is not a risk I am prepared to take. I spoke to the dealer about it and said it's due to which he agreed and his take is he will pay for half of it and I can pay for the other half and he is not prepared to budge at all on the price. At the moment I have left the car and told him I am not prepared to buy it at full price and then pay for half the cost of a timing belt. Am I doing the right thing? Surely the garage should sell the car in a fit state which would include having a cam belt that is up to date and not liable to snap in the foreseeable future.
Any advice would be appreciated, thanks

No world shortage of clios so simply go elsewhere.
Hes looking a fortune for that 6 year old one, plus hes expecting you to pay for half of the cost of the time belt - which no doubt he will buy and have his people fit - so you'll end up paying half of double what it cost him to do = you're paying for it.
Heres a very nice 2008 car with similar miles for less money...

Or another 2008 car with the 1.2 TCE engine (power of a 1.4, torque of a 1.6, economy of a 1.2 from renaults blurb)

OR a 2009 new model car for not much more... (see if he can be chipped back to your budget)

Some good suggestions by the previous poster here, there are plenty of Clio's on the market and making you pay for "half" sounds quite unreasonable. Take your business elsewhere.0
