Does split ticketing work for airlines as well as trains?

Can you get cheaper tickets by splitting the journey in planes in the same way as you can on trains?
OH and I are looking to go home to see the in-laws when I'm on half term from college in Feb next year (looking to fly on Fri 14th returning on Sunday 23rd) but it's so damn expensive already.. I guess because the half term dates are already published.
We can leave from any of the London airports, Luton, or at a push Birmingham. Flying into either Ljubljana, Klagenfurt, or Trieste.
Anyone got any ideas on how to get it cheaper than over £100 each way per person?!

Split ticketing can work on airlines but a) is unlikely to be cheaper, and b) will give you no protection if one of your flights is delayed and you miss the next one.
Skyscanner does show some routes on this basis, but you would need to book each flight separately (and incur the additional costs of doing so).0 -
flying on Valentine's day AND halfterm, no wonder it's busyThe questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....0

Cheapest I can find for you is Easyjet Stansted to Ljubljana for £177.98 or Germanwings from Stansted via Cologne to Klagenfurt for £184.99 (coming back Friday or Monday as they don't do the Sunday!)
As previously said it is valentines + half term = expensive!:(
Not sure how much this puts on to your journey but is Zagreb an option? (Looked up Zagreb to Ljub on train and its just over 2 hours so maybe!!) That's only £106 return on your dates with Easyjet from Gatwick0 -

Alitalia out of London City, into Trieste comes in at £150pp. The return flight gets in at 1000 on the Monday though.
Any good?

Generally the only way to save with split ticketing on planes is for long haul flights where you go via a short haul country/ airports with a lower taxation than the UKs. Ireland and Germany are the normal two.
The pain is you need to deal with checked in luggage yourself between the flights (unless you have over 24 hours layover) and as has been pointed out there is no automatic coverage for you missing your connecting flight
Where this comes into its own is when you are using airmiles etc. I've seen people get first class flights to New York from London via Germany for about £60 return rather than the ~£550 it would cost to fly directly with airmiles or £4,400 for paying in cash direct0
