BT charging for email account

I have been with BT email for well over 10 years. When I changed my ISP some years ago BT were happy to let me continue using my BT email address. They are now changing this and if I do not change to them for phone and broadband I will need to change to another email address or pay BT £1.60 per month. I am currently with TalkTalk and have an email address with them that I do not use as I was already well established with BT's and as BT were happy for me to use them it seemed like a bit of a palaver to change. Now I cannot decide whether to send my numerous stored utility accounts, correspondence from friends etc and contact everyone to change my email address to TalkTalk or pay up! I left BT primarily because their charges were going up and up and their customer relations going down and down! Any advice, particularly about if there is a quick way of doing the change, bearing in mind I am not really very literate on a computer!

Set up an email address that is independent of your ISP so this never happens again. Something like gmail would be one option.
Tell everyone your new address and also set up a forward from your existing address as it will be a while before they switch it off even if you refuse to pay.0 -
Setting up a Gmail account: ten minutes. Group cc email to advise all your contacts: one minute. Changing the default email addy in all your online accounts, maybe one hour?
You've only got to do it once, not really a palaver. No free lunch, and no free laptop

OP I am also in the same situation.
Part of me is thinking I should just pay, but the rest of me is so angry at the thought of it.
The annoying thing is, this is the email ad I use for important things, no spam/newsletters etc.

Gmail has an excellent spam filter, I reckon it catches well in excess of 99% of mine, and very few false positives too.No free lunch, and no free laptop

Why grr? It's a free service subsidised by existing BT customers-you couldn't have expected to get that for life?No free lunch, and no free laptop
