get deposit back on cancelled holiday

Hi all,
Sorry if this is in the wrong place or been asked before but I am new.
I paid almost the full deposit on a 2012 holiday with Thomas cook totalling around £700. I had to cancel the holiday due to pregnancy then a marriage breakdown. I had insurance and a few people have told me I could have claimed it back.
Is this true????
The problem I face if it is is I have no holiday confirmation or insurance documents. I stupidly binned them all due to being so upset at the time.
Thanks in advance

You may have been able to claim on your travel insurance for the pregnancy if you were advised not to travel or it was to a destination/activity that would have been a risk to you. You would ahve needed your doctor to sign the forms.
Breakdown of a marriage however, would not have been a valid reason to claim on your travel insurance.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
Oh thank you. My doctor did advise not to go. I'm not sure what to do next when I have no proof I even booked it...0

Were there complications with the pregnancy, or was it too close to your due date? Few policies would cover you for a normal pregnancy.0

I was classed as high risk. Was still early on in pregnancy0

Insurer may reject a claim so long after the event though.0 -

You would need to check your policy as to whether you would be covered.
You would also need to check if there is a time limit to making a claim.0 -
Most travel policies have a 28 day time limit for claims, so read it today not tomorrow! Of course if it was 6 months ago, and now re reading I see it was last year, then almost certainly it is too late to claim0

A couple of times I have delayed claiming, once for almost a year. I found that an apologetic covering letter explaining the delay persuaded them to consider the claim, but these were for small amounts.0
