Refund to closed bank account

Hi,

I cancelled my insurance with Admiral and due a refund for the remaining months on my policy. The account I originally used to pay for the policy has since been closed (I still have the debit card) - I explained this to Admiral but for "fraud prevention purposes" they have to attempt to refund the money to the card on file and wait for it to bounce before they're able to try again with different details.

They made the refund to the old card and as yet it hasn't bounced back. They provided me with an ARN number to track the payment and told me to ask my bank, Halifax, for a number to contact VISA so I can track where the payment is as it could be in a holding account.

I've contacted Halifax on various numbers who all tell me different things (and don't have a clue what an ARN number is), but in effect have all told me they can't do anything and that the problem lies with Admiral (who when I told them this provided me with the ARN) - each is blaming the other and I'm going round in circles!

Could anyone help?

The ARN is an 'Acquirer's Reference Number' these are used quite a lot, especially when payments are sent by recrediting a card.

I know this from an old posting titled "what's an ARN number".

You could always contact Halifax complaints department on 0113 242 2229 they may be able to assist you in reaching the correct department.

MSE member dalesrider also suggested in post under title "withdrawal ARN number" - this month to another member with a similar problem but their account was still open
    To:
Go back to Halifax and ask to talk to the disputes/fraud team.
They will be able to check the Visa Resolve Online system (VROL) This lists ALL transactions through the Visa system so it will show in there. Will also give a reason if it failed in the visa system.
