Wainwrights wetfood trays

I've been using this product for several years now and both my dogs, a golden retriever and a large crossbreed love it. I think it's good value for money. However the last box of 12 cartons, were a nightmare, I gave my dogs their usual evening carton, noticed they were very quiet afterwards, when I got up next morning there was liquid dog mess everywhere, both dogs rushed outside suffering from diarrhoea and were like this for several days. Checked the cartons left in the box and found several with seepage and 3 with signs of contamination, 1 was green and black, I've photographed the box and cartons and emailed P@H, customer services on Saturday, with my complaint, but as of yet, they haven't even acknowledged my email. Anyone else had a similar problem? Obviously there's something wrong with their packaging/quality control. I'm concerned for any other dogs that may use this product, particularly if they're old or ill, my dogs have recovered thankfully, but they were really off colour for several days.

  • What was the carton like that you fed them - was it green /black like the others?

There can occasionally be problems with the seals on the packs / something splitting a hole in the cover and, if they're not airtight, then the food will go off

If it doesn't look right / normal / fresh / smell OK .... don't feed it!

This can often happen with foods like this - not just WW but also others like Nature Diet etc

I took mine back to PAH and it was replaced immediately and without fuss

If you've a store near you - take it back and sure they'll do the same for you

I think you should email Wainrights directly. if the packs were in sealed boxes then P'A'H could have no reason to think anything is wrong.Wainwrights may have a problem in packing and to me its down to the manufacturers to investigate this. it may be an isolated incident or there may be a malfunction in the machinery. the firm may want to recall that batch and I wouldn't rely on PAH to inform them of the problem if you are the only customer to complain.

Used to feed it to mine - never again - horrible stuff.

  • Hi,I dont usually comment on forums, but felt that it was needed in this instance.

My chihuahua/yorkie had medical problems last year, and Wainrights was recommended for him, and to be honest its been the best food for him,and is the only food that he will eat.

I usually buy mine in the local Poole store, or in Banbury if im staying at my friends.

It was whilst in Banbury that I first noriced that there was a problem with some of the small cartons, i took them back and exchanged them.

Then on another occassion I when to open one, and noticed it was black inside, i again trturned them back to the store, and they have reported it to Wainrights.

I now check every single carton, as being such a small dog, im certain it would make him very ill, or worse.

But the problem I have is he really enjoys this food, and wont eat anything else!

PAH may have an exclusive contract with this company - or they may be supplying under more than one brand name.
I think its shameful if they haven't got back to you - email them again telling them that you have pics ,and I do hope you kept the packaging? and inform them that your next step is Trading Standards. this food is not 'fit for purpose'.

    Hi,
The cartons I fed my dogs were in a box of 12, I didn't notice anything unusual about them, I would never have fed my dogs them if I thought there was anything wrong, it was only after my dogs became ill that I checked the other cartons, some look fine but several were clearly seeping and showed signs of contamination. Unfortunately the PAH branch I bought them from is a 70 mile round trip from my home, which I visit when staying with friends in Swansea, that's why I've emailed PAH and sent photographic evidence (they still haven't replied!)
  • Thanks for your reply Meritaten, I have emailed PAH with photos and yes I have kept all the packaging. PAH still haven't replied and I'm about to email them again, I would have at least expected an acknowledgment from them. Wainwrights is their own brand so hopefully they're checking other items in same batch and contacting whoever manufactures the food for them. I wouldn't want any other dogs to be affected. Unfortunately the branch in question is a 70 mile round trip for me, I normally go there when I'm visiting a friend in Swansea.
  • just take them back to your local pets at home store they will exchange for another box of 12.

I know because i have done this myself after finding one mouldy tray. (It looked like it was a faulty seal)
I simply called the number on the side of the box and they advised me what to do. I know from past experienced that companys often take a long time to respond to email, telephone is best.

They will need to send the questionable trays away for testing.
If you explain to them that your dogs have been ill due to eating these they will need to make a full investigation and look into possible batch recall.
They may offer you some kind of vouchers due to distress caused

I never buy 12 cartons of Wainwrights since having a similar experience. Dog likes them so I get the duck flavour on occasion as a change from Naturediet (which has MUCH better sealing) but I only buy individual trays so I can slide it out of the box and check the seal.

The QC is terrible. Frankly, getting a refund is not the answer.

wainwrights wet is a very good food, nothing horrible in their ingredients.

OP sounds like you were just unlucky with a batch, it happens with all foods, so I would just go back to PaH for an exchange
