External Drive Problem

I have an external drive, which hasn't been used for a while, but the last time it was, it was fine. I plugged it in the other day, and although all the folders, and files were showing, when I tried to access anything, I get the message the drive is not formatted, and do I want to format it. Most of the stuff on it, I'm not bothered about, but there are some photos I want. Is the drive completely inaccessible, or is there something I can do to recover the files/folders. As I said, they're all visible.
