I'm no expert but I know that you can use it to transfer money instantly (any amount, I think) but there tends to be a fee of around £35. I think you'd need to talk to your bank about it, maybe phone them. I'm not sure whether it can be done online.0

Get your solicitor's bank details and go into the bank in the morning. A CHAPS transfer occurs the same day if done before a cut-off point in time. Usually costs up to £40. Take ID with you too.0

Thank you both. I already have all the solicitors' details and am more than willing to pay the fee..... anything to get it done and finish packing!0

Hi,
Take ID and go into the branch with the solicitors account details, they will chaps it for you.
I have just transferred our deposit money which was over 100k and I did it at the branch, cost £25 with santander and money is cleared in solicitors account the same day.
I can transfer up to 100k in one go on internet banking but it takes a few days for large amounts and I needed to be sure it would be with the solicitor in 48 hours.

Gary.
Thanks.
My husband went into a local branch at 10am this morning with all the relevant info/ID & they did a CHAPS payment (cost £25 which is a small price to pay at this stage) there and then. Half an hour later I got a call from our solicitors informing me that they had received the funds :T
All systems go for completion tomorrow! Best get back to my packing
Good luck with your move
PS. Thanks to everyone for the advice
