Test unconnected telephone line

Hi

Being doing up a house for a while now and double glasers ripped the telephone line when taking the front door out. its been reconnected physically to the incoming wire. is there a way this can be tested if we have not yet phoned the telephone company to have it "reconnected"?

this got me thinking.Do phone companies actually physically disconnect a line these days when you stop paying line rental or is it all computer driven? through the exchange?
thank you

thank you.

Plug a phone in. If you get a dial tone try ringing 17070 line test facility.

A reconnection requires a physical connection to be made at exchange or street cab. It's not 'computer driven', because disconnected lines are recycled for new customers.
As such, a 'new line' is only likely to be physically new if it's a new build.
If the damage is upstream of the master socket then you can't touch it: it's BT property and they will charge you a minimum £130 for the repair. If it's downstream of the NTE5 then it's your property and you can do as you wish with it-no concern of BT's.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I'm guessing if BT do issue a bill for the repair, then the OP can pass that directly to the double glasers, since they are the ones that caused the damage.

Hi all thanks for the replies. Useful info. I am actually not with BT but with Kingston Communication which is the local phone company (owns the network) but as I understand it, it would be a bill from bt who now do all the maintenance on a subcontract.

Anyway, I have tried plugging in a phone having reconnected the NT5 (I know I know) but get no tone. Is this simply likely to suggest that line is not connected or would it signify a fault?

    Thank you

Yeah. It'll be done by Openreach.

    Could be either.
