Vauxall Astra Gearbox
Options
My girlfriends vauxall astra suddenly broke down today and was towed to a garage, who informed her that the gearbox needed to be replaced. The car was purchased brand new 2.5 years ago and has only 20,000 on the clock and a full service history. She has been quoted £1600 for a new gearbox and the garage. Can there be a fault in the gearbox that Vauxall are liable for ? she has still £3000 to pay on the car and can't afford the quoted price. The dealership is stating they require payment to look at it

If brand new 2.5 years ago, surely it's under the lifetime warranty?
£1600 for the gearbox is a bit much, I got a gearbox+clutch for my Vectra for £750. The local Vauxhall dealership only quoted £1200......“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

I would think it was under warranty. My girlfriend called the dealership today and they informed her that they would charge to look at it and if it was a vauxall fault then she may have something but if not she would be charged for them looking at it. Surely though at 20,000 it must be a manufacturers fault ?0

If the car is less than three years old, Vauxhall are obliged to fix this assuming the car has been correctly serviced, regardless of the status of the lifetime warranty.
You need to get this away from the independent as any work done on the gearbox by them will invalidate the manufacturer warranty you have on it.0 -

Why are they obligated? The Sales of Goods act means after 6 months it's up to the consumer to prove it was an inherent fault with the product, i.e the gearbox.
It's possible the gearbox failed through misuse as well. A brand new gearbox can last hours or decades depending how you drive it.You need to get this away from the independent as any work done on the gearbox by them will invalidate the manufacturer warranty you have on it.
