OP, it would be a shame if you were taken ill for those last few days and so couldn't get to work and had to self certify.......;)

Here's the killer I've been signed off with laryngitis/tonsillitis several times meaning I'm on a sickness plan - conditions of which mean I have to have a sick note for even one day!
Maybe my doctor would be more understanding than my boss haha...0 -

If you leave early, you've burnt your bridge (so to speak) so it could come back to haunt you, also future employers who request a reference from your last place of work would cause huge issues.
You're in a tough situation there but I wont tell you what to do as I've not been in your situation.0 -

It sounds like a very stressful situation. I'm sure your doctor would be helpful if you were worrying, feeling sick because of it, and unable to sleep well...0 -
Try out your negotiation skills. You should be able to come to a compromise with the employer over something like this. E.g. Could you work extra shifts for the next 3 weeks so you bank enough time to take the last week of your notice as time owed?
If you offer something like this as an alternative to just not working the last week of your notice it is in their interest to compromise if possible.0 -
As someone said, what's the worst that's going to happen if you are unfortunate enough to come down with a bad case of the dodgy dinner disease - that's right, they sack you. If they sack you for the sickness then ultimately they have no comeback, by law you can self certify for X number of days anyway.
They're posturing, they can go after reasonable costs, but ultimately is it in their best interests, probably not. Essentially all it comes down to is a reference and here I'll simply ask - do you honestly think they sound like the sort of employer who'd give you a reference if you worked 100% of your notice? From where I'm sitting, they sound like the kind of place where references are not given - thus again, you're not really losing out on anything.
Think of the big picture here, you are leaving to BETTER YOURSELF, you don't owe them any sort of loyalty because you can believe they sure as heck aren't showing you any. I don't advocate lying to employers very often, but this is one case where afforementioned Dodgy Dinner Disease would be a reasonable lie.Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0 -

I have definitely thought of this but I work 9-6 weekdays and they only facilitate overtime till 7 - and even this is only when there's additional work which on my department is very rare. I will mention it though.0 -

If you negotiate on the basis that you will be leaving one week before your notice ends but want to do everything possible to mitigate the effect on the employer they may even suggest something you can do to compromise. E.g. If Christmas is a busy time would it help them if you came back for a couple of weeks to work then?
Before you speak to the employer, think about the following:
Who should you be negotiating with (manager/team leader/HR etc)?
What are you asking for?
What are the benefits to the employer if they give you what you want?
What can you offer them in return!
What can you compromise on?
What are the arguments they may try to use against you and how will you respond to each one?
Are there any precedents?
Can you mobilise any support for your cause (e.g. Team leader, union rep)?0
