M&S Energy Santander 123 cashback?
Hi,
Does anyone know for sure if the new M&S Energy brand qualifies for cashback on the Santander 123 current account?
It isn't listed on Santanders lookup site though SSE is (M&S Energy is a white label offering by Scottish and Southern Energy).
No-one at Santander seems sure. My energy ficed rate is up and was about to change to M&S but the £100 cashback I might not get brings npower's next best offering into play.
Anyone with M&S Energy currently and with a 123 current account able to confirm they are definitely getting the cashback paid to them?
thanks, guy

I'm interested to know this as well. I'm currently transferring to M&S energy and hold a 123 account.
If you don't find out I will be able to let you know in a few months time.0 -

From what people say, M&S Energy are partners with SSE Energy. You can get 2% cashback with the Santander account with SSE. Maybe M&S also.0 -
From Page 8 of the Current Account Important Information @ https://www.santander.co.uk/csgs/StaticBS?blobcol=urldata&blobheader=application%2Fpdf&blobkey=id&blobtable=MungoBlobs&blobwhere=1223433871361&cachecontrol=immediate&ssbinary=true&maxage=3600Cashback can only be earned through Direct Debit payments within the categories to companies categorised as water, electricity, gas or communications suppliers or as council tax issuing institutions in the Santander 123 Current Account Eligible Originators Classification Listing © . This list has been built using the BACS OIN Codes table which contains all companies, including major providers of these services, that issue Direct Debit payments in the UK
So in other words: M&S be the provider but I would probably argue the payments by Direct Debit would be classed as being to SSE, as they are providing the service under the M&S brand. If that is the case it will be valid for 2% cashback.0 -
thanks. The crux of it is that M&S Energy at on that Santander BACS code table or presumably they would show up when I search for them in the online lookup table that Santander provide. That might be because they only update that their copy of the BACS code table periodically (how long have M&S Energy existed???) OR it might be because they operate under the SSE account (in which case yes would get the 2 cashback) OR because M&S energy are not using a BACS code whose type is within those that Santander have classed as indicating energy companies (in which case no cashback).
That last scenario might happen if M&S do their billing via their existing Retail BACS codes so would show up as department store category. This happens with petrol stations and santander's credit card cashback where for example a supermarket petrol station uses their credit card merchant code from the main supermarket).
In those cases it's easy you just do a test transaction with them and if it doesn't get you the cashback use a different shop/petrol station. When your deciding on a 14 month fixed price energy contract though you really need to know for use up front.... Neither Santander or M&S can given a definitive answer ( I could almost "hear" the blank look on the M&S advisors face when I asked what BACS code category their Energy billing was registered under :-)0 -
more digging. got teh following from the M&S Energy website - seems to suggest it will all appear as SSE - M&S Energy is just a branding
"M&S Energy is a website owned and operated by SSE Energy Supply Limited (trading as Scottish Hydro, Swalec and Southern Electric) for the purposes of supplying energy-related products, services and information to you. SSE Energy Supply Limited is not part of the Marks and Spencer group, but uses Marks and Spencer trade marks on this Website with the permission of, and under licence from, Marks and Spencer plc."0 -
