Benefits & College

Hi There

Basically, I need some advice if possible on behalf of a friend.

He's been offered a Level 2 full time course in college which is due to start in September. He's just found out today that he's not entitled to student finance of any sort (apart from course fees paid for) as it is only a Level 2. He's also been told that he's not entitled to housing benefit, council tax benefit or JSA as it is a full time course. He's 27, single and has his own private rented flat so would need to pay rent on this.

Is there anything at all that he can do? He's ridiculously worried about the situation. It seems like a Catch 22 situation- stays unemployed due to not being able to find a job as he's not qualified or go to college, get a trade and have no money to live at all!

If any of you can help at all, it would be really appreciated. :)

He should still be able to claim LHA at the shared accommodation rate and FT students are exempt from paying CT anyway. What he cannot claim is JSA as he won't be available for work.

Most people in his situation would study part time while either working or looking for a job.

He should check on the number of hours designated as a full time course, it can be as few as 12, which may change the situation. I have known some people get JSA in that instance.

Additionally, many colleges have bursary systems payable to those on a low income. Ask at Student Services at the college.
