Multi Car Insurance

Can you use your no claims bonus on multiple policies? e.g. Use your no claims on car 1, and buy a second car and use it on that too? Or only one policy at a time? Is the NCB taken into account as named driver or the car?

Cheers,
Sam

You can only use the NCB once. (Insurance rules, they know that you can only drive one at a time, and the same driver = same risk but them's the rules)
Some companies will give you a very good discount on a second car, if they are desperate for the business, because you have a large NCB on your current car.
There is a company that offers multi-car policies, but these generally work out much more expensive than shopping around with separate ones.

From posts on here and other forums i use it appears that multicar policies are not that good.

Fair few find it costs more and more hassle if you need to claim.

    Buy wisely.

There are some family fleet or mid/high net worth policies that will duplicate your no claims on all your vehicles on the basis that you or your partner will only drive one or two cars at any one time.

  • My Mates tried various Multicar policys and it works out mega ££££.... Costs her less for 2 Land Rovers insured separately one with and one without no NCB then what the Insurance companies that offer Multi car quoted.

Multicar policies must have changed. A few years ago I had a multicar with Footman James that covered classics and modern. I had as many as six cars on it at any one time. It was MUCH MUCH cheaper than doing them individually.

Don't assume it's going to be more expensive until you check for yourself.

Motor insurance has changed a hell of a lot in the past few years and there is a big push towards multi-car policies now, even Direct Line have got involved ;)

My own experience, earlier this month was myself & my wife were insured separately, my policy came up for renewal & wife's insurer do multi-car policy so we asked them for quote & for us it worked out about half the price it would be to insure my car separately  Needless to say we snapped their hands off :money:

The ncb situation was that my wife keeps her ncb on her car & I keep mine, if I have an accident my ncb is affected & vice-versa.

It's like everything else these days - what suits someone won't suit another so get some quotes and then you'll know if it's for you or not :D

Multicar policies offered by the mainstream companies just aren't competitive. 10% off a £300 premium is still a £270 premium. With a competitive marketplace it's easy to get a cheaper quote.

We have had a family fleet policy. There are currently 9 cars on it for a £2,600 premium. The premium has only increased slowly from £2,000 back in 1994. When I joined in the early 90's my premium from my Insurer for a Golf GTi/crazy theft years was £1,400.

With a £2,600 premium the average cost is £288 per car. Of that 2 cars are high insurance groups - E55 AMG and a M5. You get your standard 65% no claims discount, a scheme discount and also a volume discount.

But managing a scheme like this with family is a PITA. This year at renewal I offloaded 4 cars from family members who haven't paid me for a few years for their share.
