I have just received notice back from Halifax that they don't have any record of my PPI on an old mortgage and have asked me to prove - help! I know I took this out - not sure where to go with this one!

When you say "I know I took this out", what exactly do you know?0

In which case, it would be a monthly direct debit from your bank account. So, why not show them that?
That is of course if they actually sold it to you. Halifax are good on old records. So, maybe you didnt buy the PPI from them. Although you seem to think you did.
