Hi
Anti virus plus apps of all types {book readers, games ect} can be downloaded from the Google play store. All that is needed is a Google address {free} then you can use the play store to download what apps you require and there are 1000's that are free in the store. Re anti virus, as I have a PC and also recently bought a cheap tablet I erred on the side of caution and downloaded {from the play store the free AVG virus software just to be safe}.
I do hope your granddaughter have just as much fun with her lovely gift from you as I am having with mine :0)

It most likely will need anti-virus, yes. Unless it came pre-installed?
And as for apps, it depends which ones she wants to download. Some are free, some are paid for. For books, the Kindle app is free but most books will need to be paid for.

For Anti virus Id download Avast, its been working fine since I started using my Nexus at xmas. For apps/games well some are free and some are paid apps, apps like iplayer and 4od are free but as been mentioned it depends what she wants to download, you can search for Top free apps in the Play store.0

There is a version of Kaspersky. Best bet is to look on the Google Play store, either via the Play icon on the tablet, or on your PC, and have a look what's available - you'll be amazed what you can get, including 000's of apps for free.
Best thing is, you can try them, then just uninstall them if you don't like them.0
