Insurance on a garage lent car

Hi after car being repaired and long story its still waiting there the garage owner lent me another car for 10 days. I couldn't insure it through my regular car insurance policy (£350p/y) so got temp cover with breakdown cover for £100. FOR 10 DAYS!! As part still not returned I am now returning the loan car so I am car-less.
Is there any cheaper way of hiring a replacement/insurance? This is a general maintenance issue as running faulty - not an accident or MOT (which it passed in June) thanks

If you have DOC cover on your normal insurance, buy a £200 banger for a friend, borrow it off them while yours is being sorted, then they can sell / scrap it to get most (if not all) of your, I mean their, money back when yours is done.0

Normally you'd add it to your existing insurance as a temporary additional vehicle but insurers often will charge an admin fee of up to $50 for doing it plus the premium itself. If repairs over run then its another admin fee and premiums to extend it0

I think the law has changed on this and all cars have to be insured unless they are SORN.

Would switching the vehicle on your own insurance not be a better option, even if an admin fee is involved. As your present car should be covered by the garages insurance.
Obviously this depends on whether your insurance will cover a vehicle you don't own.0 -

You would then have to pay to switch it back again.
10 days cover for a small run about is probably going to be cheaper than a second admin fee based on the OPs normal premiums and so a TAV is probably cheaper but both options worth checking.0 -
Check your insurance. Mine provides the same cover on a loan car while mine is in the garage for repair/service.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Yeah, forgot about that one - same problem "part time" classics users face on sunny weekends!0 -
Thanks for the replies. I rang my normal insurance first to put garage car on my policy but wasn't allowed as any change would add their car on for one year minimum.
From my policy...'Guaranteed Replacement Car service keeps you mobile by providing a replacement vehicle should yours not be driveable following a claim' ...but I haven't made a claim so that's not an option. Chatting to friends some have managed cheap £20ish for a week temp cover but all a few years ago, anyone else has recently paid around £100.
Oh well back to walking for a while.0
